This picture book does fall into to the category of Jewish Children’s Fiction for its use of a little Yiddish and the included a gefilte fish recipe. Whatever your background, at its core, this is just an enjoyable story of a family moving to America and the little girl who wants to help in their new store. Eventually she gets her chance and surprises everyone in the family and the neighborhood.
I’ll admit, having spent some of my childhood in my family’s general store, I was drawn to this positive child who just wants to help with the family business. It’s a fun peek into a type of family life that not everyone gets to see, even though small family stores are in many neighborhoods.
Ages 4 – 8 years.
