There are a lot of counting books out there for preschoolers, so I like ones that do it well and do more than one thing.

How Many Squirrels Are in the World? follows a girl and her dog as they try to count all the squirrels. What’s lovely about this counting book is how it explores nature beyond squirrels – from trees to bees. And yes, this is a rhyming book.

As for the counting every page has the number both in numerical form (5) and written form (five) so even children who are not reading yet start to see how writing works. I should also mention that the numbers stand out because they are in a distinct color. Which means this book covers numbers, colors, and exploring nature in a fun way.

Great book for a family and also for schools and libraries.

Ages 3 – 7 years.
